Reducing the Spread of Germs

With the current evolving Covid-19 pandemic, there is a particularly strong focus on reducing the spread of germs within the community, particularly through the use of face masks. Medical textiles with antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties are an important factor in the war against germs and the containment of viruses, infections and diseases such as Covid-19. Medical-grade fabrics are used in products such as healthcare masks, sleep apnea products including CPAP masks, surgical wear, dressings, bandages, artificial ligaments, nappies, back support braces, sporting ankle braces, sporting knee braces and much more.

What are Medical Textiles?

Medical textiles and antibacterial fabrics are designed to prevent the growth of potentially harmful microorganisms that may develop on face masks and CPAP masks. These fabrics are designed to stop the build up of germs resulting from the oils and acids naturally released by the skin.

If antibacterial fabrics were not used, these products could be susceptible to the formation of bacteria, viruses, mould and other harmful microorganisms, which present serious health risks, particularly to those using medical equipment. Medical textiles serve to eradicate these harmful microorganisms in these products and in effect, help to minimise the spread of germs within the community. With just one bacteria cell possessing the ability to magnify to more than one million bacteria cells in a period of only seven hours, bacteria can rapidly spread. This is why Medical textiles, such as the ones used in Face Masks and CPAP fabric, play an essential role in maintaining the health of our society.

For people who experience skin irritations and allergies, hypoallergenic and latex free CPAP fabric provides additional comfort, allowing users of CPAP masks to breath more easily. With a soft sponge-like feel, the CPAP mask is able to respond to the user’s movements through expansion and contraction, resulting in increased comfort. The softness and durability of the medical fabrics also aid in the prevention of skin irritations and allow products to be worn comfortably for longer, increasing their usefulness.

How does Biomed support the minimisation of illnesses within the community?

Biomed assists the community in maintaining wellness through the development of medical-grade fabrics that are used in the creation of medical equipment including healthcare masks and sleep apnea accessories such as CPAP masks and chin straps.

Biomed’s mission is to create high quality medical textiles, which is why we ensure that our business operations always align with our ISO 9001 certification for quality management. Our dedication to strict Australian standards demonstrates the reliability of our products and our commitment to providing our customers with superior products that offer a high level of comfort through the minimisation of skin irritations alongside antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties. Through the prevention of germs and bacteria, the life of medical products such as CPAP masks can be prolonged, as the build up of bacteria and germs can cause fabric that is not of a medical-grade to deteriorate over time.

At Biomed we have a longstanding partnership with ResMed to supply medical grade fabrics for their products, which have offered superior patient comfort for decades. Preventing the Spread of Illness with Medical Masks

In the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic, personal protective equipment such as medical masks, are at the forefront of conversation. Many people question what medical masks actually achieve and should they wear one?

If you are unsure about whether a medical mask will be beneficial for you, then it is best to seek the advice of a medical professional such as your doctor. However, to assist you in your decision, we have outlined the purpose of a medical mask both in general and in the COVID-19 battle below.

What do medical masks do?

A medical mask is designed to cover the mouth and nose, in order to prevent the spread of respiratory infections and bacteria within the community.

When should a medical mask be worn?

A medical mask should be worn by those who are experiencing symptoms that suggest a respiratory infection, such as coughing and sneezing. By wearing a medical mask, people who are feeling unwell can minimise the chances of spreading their illness to others. Medical masks are also beneficial for health professionals who are caring for those with respiratory infections. When deciding if wearing a medical mask is necessary, be sure to do research into the product or consult your doctor for professional advice.

Are masks effective against Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Research has shown that COVID-19 is spread through the community via particles in the air from coughing, sneezing and even speaking. It is highly contagious and is spread through close interaction with those who have contracted the virus. COVID-19 is also known to survive on surfaces for long periods of time, meaning that the virus can be transmitted through touching something that has been contaminated by someone with the illness. A medical mask can be worn by those infected with the disease to minimise the risk of contaminating surfaces and people. However, those that have been diagnosed with COVID-19 should remain in isolation until they have recovered.

Many people who have Coronavirus are asymptomatic, meaning that they do not experience any symptoms at all. People who eventually do develop symptoms can still spread the virus even before their symptoms arise. Therefore, it is possible to catch the virus from interacting with someone who appears to be well, but is a carrier of the virus. This is why it is recommended that medical masks are worn in public places where social distancing can be challenging, such as shopping centres. Wearing a medical mask in addition to maintaining social distancing, will reduce the chance of you spreading an illness that you may not be aware you have.

How to Wear a Medical Mask

Prior to putting on a medical mask, you should wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap. If you are unable to access soap and water, then you can use a hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Once your hands are clean, put the mask on your face so that it covers your mouth and nose. Secure the medical mask to your face by putting the elastic around your ears. The mask must have a snug fit around your face with no gaps.

Whilst wearing a medical mask, be careful not to touch the mask. If you touch the mask unintentionally, then you should wash your hands thoroughly. When you remove the mask, try not to touch the front of it and wash your hands immediately afterwards.

However, as the benefits of Medical Grade Fabrics are discovered, their use across a wide range of textile markets beyond the medical industry has grown. CPAP Manufacturing for Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a common but serious medical condition which interrupts the airways during sleep causing significant reduction in fresh air flow to vital organs. The condition occurs when the muscles in the throat become floppy and relaxed during sleep, which narrows the breathing passage and disrupts the access to oxygen. Sleep Apnea patients use their CPAP products daily and therefore require them to be highly comfortable and reliable. This is why the CPAP Company ResMed, develops their CPAP Masks, CPAP Headgear and Anti-Snoring Chin Straps using Biomed’s Medical Grade Fabrics.

CPAP Masks are a crucial component of CPAP treatment for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea. The use of masks during Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is key to effectively treating sufferers of Sleep Apnea. CPAP Companies design masks to use pressurised air in order to avoid blocked passageways and ensure comfortable breathing during sleep. Additionally, some sufferers use CPAP Chin Straps to help improve the effectiveness of CPAP therapy as the CPAP Chin Strap wraps around the head and cradles the jaw. This is important as it keeps the patients’ mouth closed during sleep, reducing snoring considerably.

However, using CPAP Masks, CPAP Chin Straps and CPAP Accessories for long periods during sleep can often increase perspiration and the build up of oils in the skin, leading to the growth of bacteria. Some patients then experience symptoms like skin irritation and breakouts in the areas around the mask as a result. In order to prevent these issues and ensure maximum comfort when using CPAP products for long periods, CPAP Manufacturers implement high quality, Medical Grade Fabrics within the CPAP Chin Straps and CPAP Accessories.

At Biomed, our allergen free, latex free and antibacterial materials are used by CPAP Manufacturers to help to minimise the occurrence of skin related issues and other summertime allergies commonly cited by Sleep Apnea sufferers. We specialise in medical fabrics that are comfortable and breathable to maximise overall comfort for the hours of use during sleep.

Whilst developing medical fabrics for use by CPAP Companies we focus on durable, lightweight and stretchy Hypoallergenic Fabrics, ensuring maximum comfort and reliability for patients who require CPAP Masks and CPAP Chin Straps for Sleep Apnea. Biomed has a longstanding partnership with ResMed to supply Medical Grade Fabrics, which have been providing superior patient comfort for decades.
